Series 63

Quick Answer
The Series 63 is the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam, required in most states for individuals selling securities as agents of a broker-dealer. It covers state securities law and ethics but doesn’t, by itself, qualify someone to act as an investment adviser representative.

What Is the Series 63 Exam?

The Series 63 is administered by FINRA on behalf of state regulators and focuses on state-level securities regulations, registration requirements, and ethical practices — it doesn’t cover investment products or advisory concepts the way the Series 65 or Series 66 do. Because of this narrower scope, holding a Series 63 alone doesn’t satisfy the qualification requirement to register as an investment adviser representative; that typically requires the Series 65, or the Series 66 combined with the Series 7.

Individuals who work in a dual capacity — as both a registered representative of a broker-dealer and an investment adviser representative — commonly hold the Series 63 alongside whichever combination of exams qualifies them on the advisory side.

Why it Matters

It’s a common point of confusion: passing the Series 63 doesn’t make someone eligible to register as an IAR. Firms should verify the specific combination of exams or designations a candidate holds before assuming they’re qualified for advisory registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Series 63 qualify me to be an investment adviser representative?

No — it satisfies state law requirements for broker-dealer agents, not the separate qualification requirement for IAR registration.

Do all states require the Series 63?

Most states require it for broker-dealer agents, though a small number don’t; requirements should be confirmed on a state-by-state basis.
