What Is the Annual Renewal Fee for RIAs?

Renewal fees are typically due in the fourth quarter of each year, ahead of the following calendar year’s registration period, and are processed through IARD’s renewal program, which bundles the federal and state-level fees a firm owes into a single payment cycle. Firms need to ensure their IARD account has sufficient funds by the renewal deadline, since late or insufficient payment can result in the firm’s registration lapsing.

Because renewal timing and amounts are separate from the Form ADV annual amendment deadline, firms should track both as distinct items on their compliance calendar rather than assuming one covers the other.

Why it Matters

A lapsed registration due to a missed renewal payment can disrupt a firm’s ability to conduct business and requires corrective filings to resolve — making the renewal deadline one of the more consequential dates on a firm’s compliance calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the annual renewal fee due?

Typically in the fourth quarter of the year, ahead of the following year’s registration period, through the IARD renewal program.

Is the renewal fee the same as the Form ADV annual amendment?

No — they’re separate obligations that happen to fall around a similar time of year; both need to be tracked independently.
